In 1541, during the pearl rush in the Caribbean Sea, two young slaves, an African born without fingers in his left hand and the last Taino Indian woman, struggle with their loneliness while they compete against other slaves to fish out a pearl big enough to win their freedom. The pearl mentioned in the story, La Peregrina, was retrieved by an African slave and sent to Spain to become one of the Spanish crown jewels. It was owned by several monarchs until it ended up in the hands of Elizabeth Taylor. A lot of important people held it, but it all started with a slave who was forced to risk his life to bring it back from the bottom of the sea
